What do you do at Verner?:
I manage the Early Head Start Home-Based Program which serves 89 individuals (pregnant parents and children birth to three) throughout Buncombe County. Our In-Home Educators make weekly home visits and collaborate with families to plan engaging activities individualized for each child’s developmental skill level, interests, and educational goals. We offer parenting education and support tailored to families’ specific questions and concerns. Areas of focus include child development, behavior management strategies, and the parent-child relationship. We also encourage families to explore their goals related to health and wellness, stability, and education/career advancement. We then partner with other community organizations to help families identify and navigate the resources that will help them achieve their goals. Each month we host two Play and Learn Socials at various locations in the community. These events are opportunities for family members to enjoy being together and to connect with other families who have young children.
What are your credentials/past experiences?:
I have an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master of Public Health. I started my career as a toddler classroom teacher at a NAEYC accredited center where I taught for four years. I lived in Egypt and Guatemala for two years each, working with children and teachers in local schools. The experience of seeing the world through a different cultural lens has been invaluable in learning to understand another point of view in any situation, and is something that helps me in my current role everyday. Since 2003, I've worked in the field of early childhood home visiting with a few different organizations here in Buncombe County. I've been with Verner since 2015 and feel that the home visiting we do as part of Early Head Start Home-Based Program is a perfect fit for me!
What do you like about working at Verner?:
Verner is a vibrant community of staff and families who truly care about each other and the work we do together. I find joy in sitting on the floor with children and families and watching them delight in each other. And, I love supporting my team of In-Home Educators as they process both their successes and their challenges.
What do you enjoy when not working?:
My favorite hobby is taking my sweet hound dog, Chester, for walks and seeing the big grin it puts on his face!
