What do you do at Verner?
I wear two hats! When I wear my HR Coordinator hat, I support Alyssa with all matters HR -though primarily welcoming and on-boarding new hires. When I wear my volunteer coordinating cap, I recruit, on-board and place volunteers at all Verner sites and supervise our AmeriCorps VISTA team.
What are your credentials/past experiences, for working in your position?
I received my Master's of Education in Environmental Education from Western Washington University and have 4 years of experience as an outreach professional in sustainability and education. Immediately prior to my role as HR and Volunteer Coordinator, I served for a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Verner, building volunteer capacity at Verner East. In 2014, I also served an abbreviated Peace Corps term in Debre Sina, Ethiopia. I served as an Agricultural Extension volunteer, focusing on food system resiliency in partnership with expectant mothers and local farmers.
What do you like about working at Verner?
My favorite thing about working at Verner is the true commitment every one of our educators and staff members has to the children and our mission. There is infinite joy and hope embedded in our work. I've learned so much about early education and child development from the many brilliant minds in the Verner community who are applying their knowledge in tangible, meaningful ways everyday. I'm also regularly inspired by experiencing the outdoors and garden time with the children who approach the natural world with playfulness and curiosity.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
When I'm not working, I wake up before sunrise to go row with my teammates out on Lake Lure. From spring through fall, we travel around the country to compete at regattas. I also love running and cycling, both on the roads and trails around Asheville, experimenting with fermented foods, and reading about soil.
